More pics of Intel’s iPhone-clone mobile phone concept; Intel’s Hafnium-based, ultra-efficient Silverthorne chips

We know, it’s already old news. Intel’s most definitely jumping into the mobile-scene and they’re planning to make a pretty big splash. So, just what does the chip-making giant have in store for us in the mobile market? Well, aside from possibly powering the next-gen iPhone, Intel’s got a pretty broad strategy for everything mobile. The Intel booth here at CES 2008 Las Vegas was filled with ultra-mobile PC concepts. Many were engineering samples that were just there to look pretty - but some were actually fully-working prototypes. We managed to elbow our way through the crowd to shoot a quick video of on of the cooler UMPC’s interfaces in action. The UMPC we played with was slated for a 1H 2008 launch, and should be outfitted with either WiMAX or 3G - in the name of cost and battery life, the connectivity options will be an “either/or” proposition. Keep reading for a video of the Intel

The IBM ThinkPad X41 notebook

The IBM ThinkPad X41 notebook is a 12.1" screen ultraportable that follows in the footsteps of last years ThinkPad X40 release. Although the X41 is small and light, weighing only 2.7lbs with a 4-cell battery, it is not underpowered by any means as it carries a 1.50 GHz Pentium M processor that uses the latest Intel 915GM chipset. Most other ultraportables on the market have a 1.10 GHz or 1.20 GHz Pentium M. Combine the X41's good processor performance with the typical sturdy IBM ThinkPad build and excellent keyboard and you have an ultraportable that's easy to recommend.

Acer Aspire One with Intel Atom Inside

Acer’s entry into the ultramobile laptop market is the Aspire one, which was announced last week. It promises to challenge the Asus Eee PC and other ultraportable machines as the market for low-cost laptop heats up. Acer’s Aspire One is equipped with the latest Intel chip, the 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, specially designed for low-cost machines. Starting from £199, the Acer Aspire One will come with either Windows XP Home or Linux operating systems, and offer an 8.9-inch screen (1024 x 600) and either a 80GB hard drive or 8GB NAND flash drive. There will be a 5-in-1 card reader and a second SD card slot which will boost storage. Acer says the additional memory afforded by inserting a Secure Digital Flash memory card into the second SD Card slot will be “instantly and seamlessly merged” by the Smart File Manager app so the laptop sees the extra gigabytes as available onboard memory. The Flash media card formats supported will be MMC, SD Card, xD Picture Card, MemoryStick and MemoryStick PRO. Battery life is promised to be up to 6 hours mainly due to the Intel Atom chip not needing a fan for cooling. Wi-fi connection is also included but 3G is optional while WiMAX has been confirmed as a future option but with no dates yet revealed. It will weigh less than 1kg and measures 24cm wide and 7cm from back to front. It comes in four different colors, initially available in a glossy blue and white but Acer says they will add two more colours later in the summer - pink and brown. The Acer Aspire One will cost £199 for the Linux version with 8GB NAND Flash drive and will be available on 10th July. The Windows XP version will cost £299 and comes with an 80GB hard drive.

Intel introduce new nettop Atom 330 CPU system

The minute I read that Intel had launched their new dual-core Atom chip, my little netbook-crazed heart skipped more than the one beat. Then I read on and, before you do the same, you should know that the Intel Atom 330 is a nettop solution and is not set to cause a craze in the release of sub-notebook computers as we saw with the Intel Centrino 2 system and full-size laptops a month or so back.
This updated Atom motherboard and CPU solution is certainly nothing to be sniffed at though. The 330 chip may have the same 1.6GHz clock speed as its predecessor, the Atom 230, but it features HyperThreading technology that, with the addition of the second core, will make for a massively enhanced performance.

Intel or Nvidia? nForce 680i Challenges Intel P965 and 975X : Can Nvidia Take The Chipset Crown?

Intel's Core 2 Duo processors have been available for about six months now, and the response has been very favorable for Intel. In fact, many people send us emails asking our views on the best platform for Core 2 Duo systems. Until now the answer has been an Intel chipset, but competition has emerged: Nvidia's nForce 680i SLI core logic wants to be the undisputed champion for Core 2 Duo processors. Of course, we wanted to know whether it really is or not...
